Stitch in the ditch

What this means is that you sew into the seam from the right side of the fabric.  By stitching into the ditch you can hardly see the sewing.  Some of the times you might use this is if you are sewing a band on to a garment.  Instead of sewing on the band, sew into […]

Mistake in first newsletter

If you subscribe to my weekly newsletter, I need to let you know about a mistake in it.  I was sent an email recently from a lovely lady who pointed out a BIG typo in my first newsletter.  If you keep the newsletters for reference I thought it best to let you know the mistake.  First […]

Altering knitted tops

Tops that have been hand knitted can be altered.  I have had success using the walking foot.  This foot can be purchased as mosts shops that sell sewing machines, or in haberdashery shops.  They range in price but are around $60.00.  The foot literally WALKS over the knit.  They are also excellent for leather.  The […]

Gathering with your over locker

Rather than sewing a long stitch and pulling the threads to gather the fabric, try using your over locker.  I would suggest you consult your manual for details.  The beauty of using the over locker is the fact that it gathers and overlocks at the same time.  A big saving on time.

Rolled hems with your over locker

I worked with a lady recently who did not realise she could convert her standard over locker into a rolled hemmer.  The modern versions have the lever on the front which is moved into the Rolled hemming position.  The older versions had a different plate.  The standard plate has an “S” on the under side.  […]

Ironing Wedding and Bridesmaid Gowns

One of the most difficult jobs for a wedding gown or bridesmaid gown if it has many layers is ironing the garment.  This may not work on all fabrics, but try hanging the gown in your bathroom when you are having a shower.  The steam from the shower usually drops out the creases, and saves […]

Convert to three thread and one needle

I personally prefer to have one needle in the right hand position and only use three threads on my overlock/serger.  Four threads are really for when you are sewing lycra and other stretch fabrics.  If you are just overlocking a garment from an alteration or making a garment, you really only need the three threads. […]

Looking after your overlock or serger

When you use the over locker or serger for a while, the fluff from the garments will accumulate inside the machine.  I always use my vacumn cleaner to get rid of the bulk of the fluff when I vacumn the house.  Make sure that the tension is on for the threads, and don’t put the […]

Changing thread on your over locker/serger

I have had some people tell me that the best way to change the thread on your overlocker or serger is to run it though using the pedal as if you are sewing.  I don’t agree with this theory because what that can do is throw the tension out on the tension dials.  Running a […]
