Pinking shears are great when you dont have an overlocker, and you want to cut the fabric so that it won't fray. Also gives a decorative edge to fabric. I use pinking shears when cutting a piece of fabric to go behind a hole in a garment. It means the fabric is less noticeable than an edge that is straight.
